Returning to college is an exciting time, especially if you are returning as an older adult. This year, Charlie will be going to Kindergarten (a full-day program here) and Owen is in preschool a couple of days a week for a few hours. This is the perfect time for me to dip my toe into finally returning to college. After having kids, going to college is still possible. Check out these tips to help make the transition a little easier on yourself and the family.
Let the family know what is about to happen
When you are returning to college, it’s best that you tell your family what is going to happen. You want to communicate and keep them in the loop as much as possible. Talk about your expectations and what you’ll need from them to make it a successful time for everyone.
Give it time for everyone to transition
Think about it, you are going back to school and this is going to take some transition. You cannot expect everything to fall into place right away. Give it some time for the whole family to transition.
Do your research
This is so true in any big decision you are making for your family. Make sure you do proper research. Know everything you can about going back to school. Try out a few classes and then dive into full time. Going back to school, especially when you have kids, will take willpower.
Find ways to relieve your stress
While returning to college after kids are very rewarding, you are going to feel stress here and there. A great thing for you to do would be to find ways to relieve your stress.
Go for walks with your family and make sure you’re eating as healthy as possible. Stress isn’t a good thing, but it is a good thing to find ways to get rid of it.
Embrace your experience
The single best thing about returning to college after kids is that you have experience. Don’t be ashamed of your experience, instead, embrace it. You have experience in life that is going to help you be even more successful in college.
