Over the holidays I pulled out some pasta for Charlie to put on a pipecleaner. He colored them with markers, we looped the pipecleaner closed, and he put it on the tree.
Daddy and Charlie went to the store today. While there, Charlie informed Daddy that they needed to get pasta “to do craft”, so… in the cart the pasta went.
While Charlie was napping today, I dyed the pasta for some crafts. If you’d like to do this- it’s super cheap and crazy easy! Things that all moms look for!
You will need:
-vinegar or alcohol
-pasta (any shape will do)
-food coloring
-wax paper
-ziploc baggies
1. In each baggie put about 1 cup of pasta. I mixed it up and used elbows and tiny shells in the same bags.
2. Add 2 Tbsp of vinegar or alcohol. If you use alcohol, it makes the pasta inedible, so I’d recommend vinegar. I only had apple cider vinegar today, and it worked just fine.
3. Add 6-8 drops of food coloring to each bag. This amount will vary of course depending how rich you want your colors.
4. Now seal and shake up your bags, making sure they’re somewhat evenly coated.
5. Let the baggies sit for 1-2 hours.
6. Go sit down and reward yourself for making such an easy and awesome craft supply.
7. Dump the baggies out onto wax paper and let them dry overnight. (or whenever they’re hard like pasta should be again)
8. When dry, store in plastic containers or baggies.
We’ll be making something tomorrow with these, so come back to see!

This would be so much fun! And my little one would have so much fun stringing them after they’re colored.

so easy! you can do this with rice too – for eating and for craft purposes. we had blue rice the other day as part of a hawaiian bowl and we’re going to have purple princess rice next week, LOL. too fun.

i did this a few years ago using alcohol instead of vinegar. i think i let mine sit too long (or maybe it was the alcohol) because after a few weeks the noodles in our necklaces all broke! i’ll have to try this again with vinegar. thanks for the tip!

Thanks for sharing this, Christina. I used a similar technique before where I had a lot of trouble with managing the amounts of ethanol and food coloring since it wasn’t mentioned before. This time I tried it with your stated quantities and vinegar instead of ethanol and it turned out to be perfectly dyed. I’ll try it again with the alcohol and see if it’s better with your stated quantity.
