Charlie is at that “WHY?” stage and has been for some time. I don’t really see an end to it actually. This movie from the creator of VeggieTales answers a lot of whys in Buck Denver Asks… Why Do We Call It Christmas?

Why Do We Call it Christmas

About the movie: Approx. 60 minutes

Cutting down trees? Hanging stockings? Santa Claus? What do any of these have to do with Jesus' birthday?  More than you'd think!  Join VeggieTales creator Phil Vischer along with intrepid newsman Buck Denver and all his friends on an amazing journey into the world's most popular holiday! Sure, you know the Christmas story. But do you know the story of Christmas? Don't miss the whimsical, educational, Christmical party to end all Christmas parties as Buck Denver Asks … Why Do We Call It Christmas?

Contains the following topics:

-Where do we get the word Christmas?

-When was Jesus born?

-What do Christmas trees have to do with Jesus?

-Who is St. Nicholas?

-What is Hanukkah?

-Who is Emmanuel?

-Luke 2 Story

The boys all snuggled on the couch and I got comfy in my chair as we sat down to watch. I love the message behind this movie, but I really loved that I got something out of it too. There are so many things that I learned too. Do you know why we put Christmas trees in our houses? I learned that in the video!

Charlie really liked the puppets and thought it was funny. This will definitely be a video we’ll watch a couple times this season and will continue to do so. He’ll get more out of it as he gets older.

I don’t have any kids, but we work with the kids at church and focus on the birth of Jesus and that he was a gift to us.

We try to teach our 6 year old about the true meaning of Christmas through story books, kid friendly movies and every year a small town about ten minutes from us put on a reenactment where the whole town is transformed into Bethlehem and the “actors/actresses” are dressed for the time frame and they have a “living manger” that they put on for two weeks before Christmas which we go to each year and of everything that we have used to teach the true meaning of Christmas the live reenactment has been the most beneficial for him to learn.

By Bible stories. We also make it plain that it’s not all about gifts.
