Create, Learn, and Explore

Although general admission is always free, Free Family Sundays provide more hands-on activities for the same low price of nothing! Past and future events include creating collages, weaving tapestries, and making paper. There’s something for everyone at BMA!

In the heart of the Mt. Vernon Cultural District, Walters Art Museum showcases art from third millennium B.C. to the early 1900s. Let’s Play activity events are perfect for the younger set, and homeschool programs are also available during weekday hours for all ages. These events usually have a small fee and sell out early. Admission to the museum, however, is always free for all ages.

Talk with the Animals

Salisbury

Salisbury Zoo in the city that bears its name is one of the rare free zoos in the country. Visit the animals then take the little kids to storytime every Tuesday from 10-11 a.m beginning the week of March 7. To support this fine free zoo, you can even adopt an animal. For only $25, receive a personalized Adoption Certificate with picture of your selected animal and an animal fact sheet for your child. Check out the endangered Andean bears, hoot with the owls, and squeal when you see the adorable monkeys! Enjoy multiple displays of birds from around the world. You’ll love taking your kids to the Salisbury Zoo.

Take a Walk Down by the Boardwalk

Ocean City

Ocean City’s wooden walkway originated in 1902 and has since been rebuilt to extend to 2.5 miles. Although you can spend money in shops and restaurants along the beachfront boardwalk, you can saunter amidst the delight that is Ocean City while people-watching and enjoying a beautiful walk with the kids for free. Almost every night, there is a free event for the family to enjoy! A five-story inflatable sphere lights up the beach with OC Beach Lights (schedule varies). During summer and early Fall months, watch free family-friendly movies on the beach. Every morning at 10 a.m., learn about beach safety with lessons about sharks, knot-tying, and more at the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum. The boardwalk is a perfect affordable kid-friendly destination in Maryland.

Greenbelt
