I have always loved the idea of a garden, but it does take some work. We’re working on starting our first garden this Spring. Although my kids are still young, I’d love to get them involved in gardening as much as possible. Gardening provides a way to grow your own food and learn the value of hard work.
Want to get your kids to love gardening? Follow these tips.
1. Talk to them about gardening
Your kids will never grow a love for gardening if you don’t talk to them about it. Tell your kids why it’s awesome and why they can benefit from it. Just like anything else in life, children learn best from their parents.
2. Let them start their own seeds
One awesome way to get your kids to love gardening is to let them start their own seeds. Start the seeds in the house and then transplant them to your garden. Kids love watching things grow and they love it even more whenever you involve them in it.
3. Make it fun
Gardening will never be fun if you’re not making it fun. Take some time to laugh, sing, and have a grand old time while gardening. Sure, gardening is a serious chore, but you can still have fun while doing it.
4. Stick with it
Kids are going to love gardening even more if you stick with it. From start to finish, make sure you follow through with the entire process of gardening. Once kids can eat the veggies they grew themselves, they will be fascinated with the idea of gardening. Little ones love anything they can do themselves, so gardening should fit right in.
5. Encourage play
Another way to get your kids to love gardening is to encourage play. While there is a time to be serious in gardening, it’s also a great way to get hands and feet dirty.
If your kids love getting dirty, surely they’ll soon grow a love for gardening. Gardening is a FUN way to get messy and dirty.
6. Get creative with the idea of gardening
If you want to instill a love of gardening in your kids, then have fun. Seriously, decorate the garden, plant veggies that they are curious about, and let them ask questions. Gardening is an excellent learning experience, so let your kids “dig in.” Literally.
We recently tried out Miracle-Gro Gro-ables! They are so simple, making them perfect for kids (or any new gardener). Everything you need to grow a fruit, herb, or vegetable is found in this seed pod.
On the inside label of each of the Gro-ables is a bunch of information about the seed pod. You’ll find info on how to plant them and tips & tricks!
All you need to do is push the pod into loosened potting mix until the top is level with the potting mix’s surface and water daily.
In 1-2 weeks your seed will sprout. Several months after planting, flowers will appear which means fruit is close at hand. Each Gro-able is guaranteed to grow!
Gro-ables is a fun activity for kids and families that get kids outside and interacting with nature and food.
When it comes to getting your kids to love gardening, some may not like every aspect of it, but I always say “it never hurts to try.” Honestly, I’m sure there is something they’ll love, even if it’s just playing with the dirt or painting a gardening pot. Check out the Gro-ables Project (a movement to share the joy of growing herbs and veggies while giving kids truly hands-on learning experiences) for more fun ideas! .

Nevermind the kids, *I* need these, haha! We started a garden last year and it didn’t turn out quite as great we were hoping, so we’re trying again this year.

I fell in love with gardening when I was a kid because we started potatoes at school in a dixie cup! Talk about a harvest – I was very impressed when we dug up 20 or so potatoes from that one plant@@ Thanks for sharing with us on Throwback Thursday!
