We’re having a rainy day here today, but it’s 100000000x better than another snow day. We were lucky enough to hit the zoo yesterday, so an inside day today is okay by me.
Here’s a rainy day activity that allows a child to feel like they’re being messy, but it doesn’t really create much mess for mom (or dad) to clean up when they’re done.
You will need:
- a non-stick pot
- 2 cups of baking soda
- 1 1/2 cup of water
- 1 cup of corn starch
- food coloring (optional)
Directions:
- Mix the ingredients until smooth
- Boil until thick
- The whole procedure takes about 5 minutes!
Last week, Hayley at Everyday Hayley linked-up a post on How to make your own Rock Candy!
Now it’s your turn to link up this week!

We make our own play-doh, too. It’s cheaper than the store bought stuff and I don’t think it dries out as fast, either.

Your son looks like he is having a blast. Such an inexpensive way to keep them busy and build dexterity. Love it!

I make mine for the kids too. They love it, hours of fun and mine is also a snack made with peanut butter. They look forward to it every time I made it.

And to think pf all the money my Mom must have spent on me and that I spent on my friends kids on Play Doh! That is really easy to make!! Well, now I know how if I ever have to get some for anyone else!
Rebecca Bryant says
My mom said i use to eat the play dough as a kid. Maybe that’s why i’m a little nuts.
Kristen from The Road to Domes says
My mom used to make something similar to this for us when we were little! I liked it because you had so much creativity with the colors!

Interesting – I think I always saw having flour as an ingredient.
