We took a trip to Ireland last year, but it was just us. We knew immediately the kids would love it, so this time we brought the kids to Ireland! Day 1 We left the house Monday, August 14th about noon and arrived at Newark International Airport at about 2:30, breezed through security, and sat […]
10 Back to School Shopping Tips with Little Boys

Thanks to Boscov’s for sponsoring today’s post. As always, all opinions are my own.
The boys and I recently embarked on a trip to Boscov’s to get the back to school clothes shopping done. I see so many friends that talk about how much fun shopping is with their little girls. Honestly, it’s not that great shopping with little boys, but if we’re being honest – the husband doesn’t like it much either. To help make your trip successful with your little boys, I put together a list of ten tips for back to school shopping with little boys.
1. GO THROUGH THE CLOSETS AND DRAWERS
I started out our back to school shopping by going through the boys’ drawers and closets. There were so many clothes in there that no longer fit them or that were out of season.
I buy ahead when I catch a good deal and have some hand-me-downs piled in the closets. After checking those and reorganizing the drawers in each of the boys’ rooms, I’m able to see what we actually have.
2. MAKE A LIST
Now that I went through the closets and drawers, I’m able to make a list of what each kid actually needs. This is key! It helps assure you buy everything you need and only what you need for each child.
Before you head to the store, go over the list with your little ones so they know what the plan is once you arrive.
3. SET A BUDGET
While you should have an overall budget for your back-to-school clothing shopping, I really mean that you need to have a set price in mind for specific items. For example, think about how much you feel comfortable spending on a long-sleeve shirt, a short-sleeve shirt, a pair of jeans, a winter jacket, and even socks.
When you find something the kids really love, but it’s over the budget for said item – that’s your call. Maybe find some alternatives or show them that they can get two other things instead of that one single thing.
4. FEED THE KIDS
I know I get a little hangry at times and these little boys are even worse. Do yourself a favor and feed them before you head out. And maybe pack a granola bar or some fruit snacks for a mid-shopping snack.
5. LET THE KIDS PICK
Ever have your kid stare at their dresser in the morning and complain they have “nothing to wear”. If kids can pick out their own clothes in the store, they’ll be more excited to wear them come school time!
Owen was super excited to find some of his favorite friends from Paw Patrol, Minions, and Cars on new clothes.
Charlie picked out a few fun pieces with LEGO characters and different superheros.
If there are specific items you want to get, let them pick from a few options. I love getting classic pieces in solid colors because they go with everything. Allowing them to pick which colors they want makes them feel in charge of their own clothing and I still get the classic, easy pieces I want.
I love the French Toast brand at Boscov’s. We were able to pick up these solid short and long sleeve shirts for 60% off an already great price!
6. DON’T FORGET ACCESSORIES
When making your list, don’t forget to check for socks, underwear, belts, and hats. Better yet, just pick up some new underwear and socks to start the year off right. I found an amazing sale at Boscov’s on socks and may have come home with 3 packs for each boy!
Seriously, I feel like I can never have enough socks and this makes me feel better about tossing out that basket of lost mates.
7. SAVE YOUR OWN SHOPPING FOR ANOTHER DAY
While I really wanted to get in some shopping for myself, but I’m not a fan of bringing the boys with me. It’s better to just make this day about them and get their shopping done while everyone is still in a pleasant mood. I know better than to push my luck and attempt to shop for Mom!
8. BROWSE CLEARANCE
I’m a sucker for a good deal. What makes Boscov’s pricing even better? Clearance pricing! Items like T-shirts can be worn year round, so I made sure to grab a few extras.
This is also a great way to buy a season ahead. Get those shorts for next year on clearance!
9. REVIEW YOUR SELECTIONS
Before heading to checkout, review your list with the items you collected in the cart. Make sure you didn’t forget anything that you need! If there were items that went over your budget, check with your kiddo (and yourself) to make sure that’s what you really want. With Boscov’s though, I’m sure you found a great deal!
10. BRIBE THEM
I know some people say not to bribe kids, but I’m totally not one of them. Maybe you don’t call it a bribe, but that’s what it really is. Our Boscov’s has a candy section and the boys were treated to a piece of chocolate and a chocolate covered pretzel after our shopping adventure!
Make sure to attend the Boscov’s all-store Back-to-School event on August 26! Find your local Boscov’s store and see what all the event includes! My store in Delaware will be kicking off the Back to School season with a variety of community organizations who will be providing crafts, games, and fun activities for children and families.

After reading your article I think that you have fun with your kids. It’s really tough to handle kids especially small kids, but we can enjoy the shopping with them. Definitely, they want to buy more and more but the limit is necessary.
