You can create your own pizza garden by growing most of what you need for a pizza right at home!
This post is sponsored by True Leaf Market, though all opinions are my own.
Everyone loves pizza, right? We have pizza at least once a week. It's perfect for a quick, easy meal after a busy day or a hot lunch that you know is family-approved. Pizza is always a win in our house.
While we all enjoy the ease and convenience of delivery, there's something extra special about making your own pizza at home.
You can buy pizza sauce, pizza dough, cheese, and toppings at the store.
Or…
You can grow your own pizza garden from seeds!
What is a Pizza Garden?
A pizza garden is a garden with vegetables and herbs that are used to make pizza!
It's a great way to show kids where their food comes from and how we use those ingredients to make some of their favorite meals.
What Do You Need for a Pizza Garden?
You'll need good garden soil! You can use a garden plot in the yard (try a round design with each section marked off like pizza slice triangles). Don't worry if you don't have a yard – these all work great in containers! We plant tomatoes in a raised container on our side porch and keep our herbs in a little planter bin on the kitchen windowsill.
Seeds! We prefer growing from seeds so the kids can really follow the entire process. True Leaf Market has all the seeds you'll need for a pizza garden.
When growing from seeds, you'll likely want to start them inside – try this True Leaf Market Seed Starting Set.
All plants need water! Make sure you check daily – this is a great job for the kids!
Your tomatoes will need cages or a way to stake them.
Grab some kid-friendly gardening tools. When the kids have tools that are their size, they'll want to use them!
What to Plant in a Pizza Garden
Tomatoes: Whether you make pizza sauce from tomatoes or put sliced tomatoes on top of the pizza, you need tomatoes in your pizza garden! We love Roma tomatoes for our homemade pizza sauce. Roma tomatoes are always great for toppings too. We used True Leaf Market Roma Tomatoes in our pizza garden. They are available for purchase in packets or all the way up to a 1 lb bag of seeds!
Peppers: Plant some bell peppers (like these True Leaf Market California Wonder Peppers) or jalapeno peppers in the pizza garden. Make your pizzas colorful by including bell peppers of different colors. Add a little spice to your pizza with some jalapeno peppers.
Onions: Onions are a must-have on a pizza for a lot of people. Make sure you get the best variety for your climate.
Oregano: You can use oregano in your pizza sauce or sprinkle chopped oregano on top of your pizza.
Basil: Chop up basil leaves for your homemade pizza sauce or sprinkle on your pizza. Margherita pizza is always a good choice: just mozzarella cheese, tomato sauce, and basil. You can use also basil to make your own pesto for a fun twist on the regular pizza.
True Leaf Market has a great variety of vegetable seeds and herbs to choose from.
You can purchase True Leaf Market Herb Garden Seeds. We received a set of twelve packets with Parsley, Thyme, Cilantro/Coriander, Basil, Dill, Oregano, Mint, Chives, Savory, Garlic Chives, Mustard, and Sage. You can use these seeds to grow your own herbs indoors or outdoors.
Make a Pizza
Of course, the best part of a pizza garden is making the pizza!
When your herbs and vegetables are ready to harvest, just grab (or make) pizza dough, cheese, and any other toppings you may want to get started.
Kids will love piling their homemade pizza up with fresh veggies and herbs that they helped grow!
